Admission Criteria

Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Psychotherapists, Physical Education Teachers, and Sports Scientists:

Individuals who have acquired a special qualification in the field of competitive sports or who are active in competitive sports at an international level (coaches, physiotherapists, life and social counselors, sports medicine specialists, etc.) and wish to expand their sports psychological knowledge as well as their personal mental action competence are also welcome to apply and may be considered in exceptional cases. Since we have had very positive experiences with such participants in the course so far, we highly recommend applying. Important note: However, completing the module series does not grant participants from this group the eligibility to be included in the respective expert registries for sports psychology, as they lack the primary professional education (e.g., a diploma degree in Psychology or a university degree in Sports Science/Physical Education). Further information can be obtained from our course office.

Professional Profile

Particularly in the field of mental support for athletes, dubious counseling and further education offers from various individuals and institutions are continuously recorded. This module series was initiated to guarantee reputable and high-quality sports psychological and mental counseling and support in competitive sports.
In Germany, according to the ruling of the Federal Court of Justice (BGH 1985 Ref: I ZR 147/83), only individuals who hold a diploma degree in psychology may call themselves a psychologist. For consumers, this designation implies a person with a completed university degree majoring in psychology. In legal commentaries, the professional title (psychologist or professional psychologist) is associated with at least a 5-year university degree majoring in psychology. Consumers are misled if individuals use this professional title without possessing this academic qualification. The unauthorized use of this professional title is prohibited by the Act Against Unfair Competition.
Under the Psychology Act of 1990 (BGBl. No. 360) applicable in Austria, the professional title "Sports Psychologist" can only be used by individuals with a completed diploma degree in psychology. The professional group of sports scientists, physical education teachers, and coaches may operate in selected areas of sports psychology, provided they possess the appropriate qualifications. This professional group may use the designation "Mental Trainer" or "Mental Coach".
